The Reservoir of the Deep, Deep

Today I ponder the image of the reservoir.

It is a deep reserve where things pour in and do not flow out. Its dark with deep silence. The kind of silence from which clear thoughts are born. As I look up from the bottom I see the water rushing in. It runs down the sidewalls, bouncing and whispering as it tumbles to the floor. In some places it rushes, white and frothy. But in others, its a delicate trickle, this dark clear and clean water.

Now it’s filling up.

There are no outflows down below so as it rushes in, it swirls around the bottom, creating a pool. This living pool is singing as it rises, rises up. Lifting me up, up to the top.

At the top we break the into the light. The water is still rushing in but now, now we are full. Full to overflowing. The water pouring in is equaled to the water cascading out. And so from this reservoir, this deep cavern, a joyous overflow is born. It gives and gives into a flowing river. A river flowing from the giving. It gives without any loss. And the level never runs dry.

“If you are wise, you will show yourself rather as a reservoir than as a canal. A canal spreads abroad water as it receives it, but a reservoir waits until it is filled before overflowing, and thus without loss to itself, it shares its superabundant water.” – Bernard of Clairvaux, Sermons on Song of Songs

In sitting with it, taking the time, I become that reservoir, not the canal dry.
